Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is the major problem while on trekking to the higher altitudes. Altitude sickness is the lower amount of oxygen present in the higher altitude due to which the climbers find suffocation and other problems. It’s because of the low air pressure. It’s very dangerous that can be of altitude sickness. When a climber reaches at the highest altitude more above then the altitude sickness can occur because of the low air pressure presents there. Medical kits should be provided if a person gets altitude sickness.

1. Causes of altitude sickness: As mainly altitude sickness is because of less air pressure in higher altitude. There are many causes of altitude sickness. Out of them some of the major causes of altitude sickness are mentioned below.

  • Less presence of oxygen level at higher altitude.
  • Low air pressure at higher altitude.

2. Symptoms of altitude sickness: Altitude sickness is also called as an acute mountain sickness. Symptoms of altitude sickness are :

  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Swelling of hands and legs
  • faintness and tiredness
  • Queasiness and many more.

3. Prevention of altitude sickness: Correct acclimatization reaching more than 2000 meters altitude can prevent altitude sickness. Proper lot of drinking water is also necessary on the top. Resting while trekking and prevent overwork narcotics also be avoided. Alcohol shouldn’t drink on the way to top.

4. Treatment of altitude sickness: Altitude sickness can also be treated on the way also. Oxygen cylinders should be provided a lot. Nifedipine medicine should be given in order to maintain blood pressure. Phosphodiesterase inhibitor it’s a medicine to raise the blood flow to lungs may given . Treatment should be given and patience should be move to low altitude where there will be maximum air flow of oxygen. Generally we use Diamox (Acetazolamide) tablet to treat the altitude sickness.
